Winnipeg Jets | Winnipeg NHL Franchise
The
Winnipeg Jets are a professional ice
hockey team, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The team came into
existence after True North Sports and Entertainment purchased the then
Atlanta Thrashers and obtained league permission to move them to Winnipeg,
where the team was renamed the Jets in honour of the original hockey team
in Winnipeg. The team will play its home games at the MTS Centre in
Downtown Winnipeg beginning in the fall of 2011.
Winnipeg will continue as a member of the Southeast Division of the
Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL) for at least the
2011–12 NHL season. Prior to the start of the 2011–12 season, after
playing as the Atlanta Thrashers since 1999, the franchise was
contingently acquired by True North with the intent to move the team to
Winnipeg. The new franchise and relocation were unanimously approved by
the NHL Board of Governors on June 21, 2011
